Given that the agreement had this early distortion of text and implementation, Irish nationalism is particularly defensive. Claims that something violates the Belfast Agreement and its misrepresentation as a complete agreement are not new to Unionist ears. We have been hearing this for 20 years and we have made further progress. On 17 October 2019, EU leaders and Boris Johnson agreed on a revised withdrawal agreement that would replace the backstop with a new protocol.   Essentially, this project would de facto include Northern Ireland in the EU`s customs union and single market for goods (including the introduction of EU VAT), while giving the UK the opportunity to turn away from each other. . . .
